I see you updated the game with pawn promotion being randomized, I like this change.
Do you have an email or discord?
Not at the moment. Although I do plan on creating one in the future!
Right now I’d like to focus on learning and creating games. Feel free to follow this account though as I’ll keep posting games here!
May I ask as to why you chose Godot? Will you continue to update this game?
Are you moving on to other projects?
I generally like using open source software when possible, mostly for the transparency aspect. I’ve used unity before and it worked fine, I just have grown to enjoy the Godot workflow.
Probably not, although I’ll never say “never”! This was my first completed and released game so there’s a lot of stuff I’d like to completely redo from the beginning. However, I will be open-sourcing this entire game and linking that source code here (sometime soon).
Yep! I’m planning out a new project right now. My goal is to release that game and likely one other game this year. Any game I upload to this itch account will be free to play.
Would you make your games open source for modding?
Modding, learning, curiosity, whatever you want! The license will detail it but whatever license I choose will be open for non-commercial purposes.
Nice game, there's no game bug I've encountered.
Unfortunately the game rules/difficulty are a bit inadequate, as you can just win by putting as many pawns as possible. The game drags on (I've reached level 70, is there an end?). There is no strategy to plan and no reason to put any piece other than spam pawns (it's a common problem of game where you can scale the cheapest option).
It's quite surprising how the pieces move in "real time". I would have expected more chess like rules (one piece per turn). Which might be why having lots of units is very powerful. The AI playing you can also be stupid/make some blunders which can be frustrating.
Not only can you spam pawns, you can also make them stronger for free by activating the rook upgrades. If you don't have any rooks they don't cost anything but they still upgrade your pawns once they turn into rooks.
Glad to hear you thought it was fun! The current (and only) mode is an endless mode so it’s mainly a high-score chasing game.
More complex strategy and balancing was something I don’t think I spent sufficient time on pre-release. Pawn spam is for sure one of the best strategies.
The AI definitely makes (a lot) of blunders. I don’t think I fully realized how complex chess AI can get so I kept it relatively simple, which leads to a lot of bad moves!
Thanks for the the great feedback on my first game! Glad to hear you thought it was fun.
I’m working on a patch to fix the crash and stalemate issues.
